Current Opening: Electrical Engineer
ABOUT US
We are New Zealand’s go-to electronic product design and development firm for harsh environments. From design to manufacture, we create reliable, high quality, customised solutions for clients in New Zealand and throughout the globe. We’ve successfully developed nanosatellites and payloads, specialised battery systems, space science experiments, and more; with numerous exciting projects on the go now and in the pipeline.
We are a small team of dedicated, innovative, friendly professionals looking for a like-minded person to join our team. We love what we do and seeing our work take flight. We like working together and hanging out together, with after-work drinks on a Friday and the occasional quirky pub quiz. We have a mental health wellbeing service available to our staff and their families too.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As an Electrical Engineer at Asteria, you’ll develop custom electrical hardware and firmware to enable our clients to achieve their goals, on earth, in space, or somewhere in between.
You will be an essential part of our friendly team. As a small team, each person makes a huge impact - you’ll be able to see the difference you make. In this dynamic and exciting role, you’ll find a broad range of electrical engineering opportunities and be a part of our domestic and international customers' journeys from concept to manufacture.
You will manage projects from start to finish. You’ll work closely with our clients, using your awesome communications and customer service skills to understand their goals and how we can help them. You’ll design and produce schematics, circuit boards, and products for some of New Zealand’s key aerospace and harsh environment organisations. You will be responsible for building trusted relationships with clients and having a deep understanding of their goals and product needs. You will provide sound advice to clients and work closely with them to develop and integrate products.
This role is ideal for someone who likes to do something a little different each week. Someone who enjoys variety, can manage their time and multiple projects effectively, and enjoys a creative challenge. Someone who works efficiently and effectively on their own, but loves a good brainstorming or problems solving session with the team. Someone who enjoys working with people. Someone who is passionate, hardworking and is excited to build something new—something that could go to space!
This is a full-time position, though for the right candidate we’d be happy to discuss part time options. You must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand to apply. Given the tangible nature of hardware development, we’re looking for someone who can come into the office in Christchurch, though we are able to flexible when required.
The pay range for this role is $70,000 - $100,000.

APPLYING FOR THIS ROLE
In your Cover Letter please answer the following two questions:
Tell us about a time when you had to make a difficult trade-off in a hardware or electronics project (for example: performance vs. reliability, time vs. test coverage, simplicity vs. scalability). What decision did you make, and how did you communicate and justify it to your team and stakeholders/clients?
Describe a time when you built a strong, long-term relationship with a client/stakeholder (internal or external to your company). What steps did you take to earn their trust? What was your approach to understanding their needs and expectations? Was there a time you went above and beyond for them?
Please also send through your CV, and if you have any examples of circuit boards you have created that you can share with us, we’d love to see them. All items should be sent in a single email to Sarah at sarah@asteriaengineering.com.
If you choose to apply, thank you for taking the time to put together your application and for you interest in working with us!
